Northwest Iowa was treated to great high school football on Friday night, highlighted by two county rivals in Central Lyon and West Lyon in the Beef Bowl. From the start of the season these two rivals seemed to be on a collision course to meet at the end of the season with no losses. That was the case on Friday night as the two heavyweights met for a bout that would rock Northwest Iowa. The game featured a little bit of everything from big stops to 4th quarter comebacks as CLGLR was forced to come back from a 10 point deficit to win the Class 2A District 1 title for the second year in a row. The highlights from the game included a first half Jaxon Meyer 7 yard run for a touchdown and then successful extra point only to be answered by a Zach Lutmer touchdown and unsuccessful two point conversion. The score at the half was 7-6 Wildcats. A special teams miscue in the 2nd half by the Lyons resulted in a safety and the Wildcats adding 2 more points for a 9-6 lead. The safety then set up another Meyer touchdown run which gave West Lyon a 16-6 lead. Things were looking grim for the Lyons, but then came the answer on a Lutmer to Taylor Putnam strike for 6. The score was then 16-13. Just when the Lyons needed it a most, they urged a defensive stop as West Lyon held the ball in the 4th quarter forcing a punt. After this key defensive stop by the Lyons they came back down the field and scored with another QB keeper by Zach Lutmer. Things were not over just yet as the Wildcats had time left to score but the Lyon defense held firm. 20-16 would be the final, scoring a 2A District 1 title for the Lyons as well as a first round BYE. Even in defeat the West Lyon Wildcats will also have a first round BYE.
